New Album from The Pass

30 Sep

Up-and-coming pop rock group The Pass just released their first full album Burst last week.  They sound like a crossbreed of Phoenix & MGMT.

Her introduced me to them with this song from their old EP Colors.

“All respects to heaven, I like it here”

30 Sep

Take Imogen Heap’s voice, layer in some crazy-good electronic beats (and at 1:30, some simple, but fitting acoustic guitar), and you have Lali Puna’s “Faking the Books.” The lyrics are not the happiest, and they aren’t so much about plagiarism. But not to worry, her voice is so smooth and hidden in instrumentals that it doesn’t matter that she’s saying “this ain’t heaven.”

P.S. The quote in the title of this post is from “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann. Read it. Now.

“We seldom know what we’re hearing when we hear something for the first time, but one thing is certain: we hear it as we will never hear it again. We return to the moment to experience it, I suppose, but we can never really find it, only its memory, the faintest imprint of what is really was, what it meant.”

Get Spiritual….Enigma

This is some hippie shit. Listen to what she says, mad funny, get high. Quite an intro to an album.

My drama teacher used to make us meditate to this one:

Home Remix

I loved this song when it first came out. Since it’s been overplayed so much this fresh remix sounds awesome. I found this on stereomood.com, my new favorite site.

Indie Trip-Hop…. Star Slinger

28 Sep

Love this girl’s accent. Anyways, Star Slingers the only artist I’ve heard that makes a dynamic beat by, what sounds like, just playing with the volume of the entire track. Also listen to “Mornin’” “Bumpkin” and “Gas” off Star Slinger’s album Volume 1.

Tiesto.

Tiesto opened with Kaleidoscope at Ultra last year and it was a pretty magical build-up after waiting so long for him to go onstage. Her showed me the song a while back, and has been on my “study” playlist since.

Alongside all the great hits in Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope album, Fresh Fruit is a lesser known gem.

I figured I should put a Tiesto post on here before he’s just something of the past.

If you like Arcade Fire, If you like John Legend

28 Sep

“Wake Up”, one of Arcade Fire’s catchy and lively tracks from their debut album, was just covered by the John Legend and the Roots at Terminal 5 in NYC. And if that’s not enough, Spike Lee directed the concert.

All Delighted People

Thank you, Sufjan [in my imagination, we are on a first name basis…] for continuing to be an eclectic and soothing musician. Released in August, his newest EP “Heirloom” combines his characteristic folksy sound with lyrics that instantly remind me why I continue to listen to his music after all of these years. And his album art for this EP is fantastic.
