Remix: “Better Than Love”

31 Oct

At dinner, my friend posed the question “if you could go back in time and bring with you one thing, when would you go and what would you bring?” His response was he’d go back to Ancient Egypt with a flashlight and proclaim that he’s the Sun God. (Someone else said he’d go back to when Jesus was born and would have a video camera)

“Better Than Love (Italoconnection Remix)” transports you back in time with an 80s vibe, while retaining some fresh electro-pop feel. The group Hurts hails from the UK, and as BBC puts it, “[they are an] elegant and enigmatic Manchester electro duo.”

Erlend Oye “Drop (Kings of Convenience Remix)”

31 Oct

Norway’s Erlend Oye may be better known for being a member of Kings of Convenience, and later creating the band, The Whitest Boy Alive, but his solo career is noteworthy. This remix of Erlend Oye’s “Drop” produced by Kings of Convenience is a fitting soundtrack for your lazy Sunday afternoon.

The End of Original Music?

31 Oct

This song scared me. Will we reach a time where we’e exhausted all original music, used up all the delightful melodies and beats. Used all the notes within our range of hearing. Will my kids only know music that’s a remix or mashup? Probably not. But its not out of the question.

The number of samples used in “original” pieces these days is becoming scary. Yes, you can argue that all artists are inspired by each other and it requires creativity to add your own twist BLAH blah, but in this song Lupe took it pretty far and literally raped and pillaged Modest Mouse’s “Float On”. It’s acceptable when a sampling/cover is put on an EP or something on the side, but this will be on Lupe’s upcoming studio album Lasers…. Can’t deny that I like it though.

Crystal Castles “Not in Love” ft. Robert Smith

27 Oct

Yes, Robert Smith from the Cure.

Yes, Crystal Castles.

“Not in Love” came out on CC’s self-title album last spring, but this version with Smith, to be released as a single on December 6, turns the track upside down and inside out.

My friends are seeing Thievery Corporation right now

26 Oct

Thievery Corp is a D.C. based duo producing a mix of lounge, acid jazz, and reggae. Their sound is super chill, the type to play as background music all day long and love it. Def music to toke to. They’d be great to see live, too bad I’m not there…

Lykke Li’s “Get Some”

26 Oct

Sony announced on Monday that it would stop producing the Walkman (I didn’t realize they were on the market still…). I remember my first Walkman, which came with a tape cassette of The Little Mermaid soundtrack. Thank god my music tastes have changed…

Check out Lykke Li’s “Get Some.” With lines like I’m your prostitute/You gonna get some, this song is far from the Disney tunes of my childhood, but still just as catchy.
