Whitley

26 Jan

I go to school in upstate New York. There is a farm with five cows visible from my home. There’s some snow, some hills, and no ocean. People are playing guitars and ukuleles in my house constantly. It’s no wonder I’ve been on a folk music craze. Whitley’s “More Than Life” has a title that sounds like a Backstreet Boy song but has a style that is completely different (kind of like Miami to upstate New York). It’s considerably poppy, but more it’s just chill guitar indie shit. In fact, this isn’t even folksy. I’m sparing you from the real gritty folk stuff I’ve been listening to lately.

1 month without Aussies

21 Dec

Today marks one month since I’ve been home from Oz. I definitely miss the place, the lovely city of Sydney, the beaches, the parks, the people, the accents…

This popular song by Gotye was definitely the most notable song that I picked up and heard (like everyday) while I was there.

Fleet Foxes is my Christmas Music

13 Dec

Out with Bing Crosby, in with Fleet Foxes. Listening to the radio the other day, in between christmas carols, I heard a Fleet Foxes song. The dreamy voices and chill guitar remind me a bit of Bon Iver, but also of the holiday spirit. I suppose nothing can stop the popularity of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas,” however I can picture myself listening to a song like “Blue Ridge Mountains” as the snow falls on the pavement of the highway as I go shopping for presents. Below are downloads for “Blue Ridge Mountains” as well as “Oliver James.”

I’m not a country fan, but…

13 Sep

A taste of America while I’m on other side of the world: Pretty Lights remixes John Denver’s “Country Roads”. In introduction is in order: Ravers, meet 70’s folk music. Country hippies- meet electronic music.

James Yuill

22 Jun

Thanks to a good friend of mine, I was introduced to James Yuill, a British musician. His innovation is shown in the Guinness commercial below:

Now, listen to two of his tracks, “This Sweet Love (Prins Thomas Sneaky Edit)” and “No Surprise”. Can’t put my finger on the words to describe his music, but perhaps electronic-folksy-ambient-eclectic will do the job. Enjoy.

P.S. I bought the Bon Iver album, as aforementioned, and it is beyond amazing. I’ve been blasting it all day.

Bon Iver “Bon Iver”

10 Jun

In a world of remixes, excitement, chaos, dubstep, and complicated music technologies, it’s nice to hear calmness every once in a while. Bon Iver has seemingly mastered the art of zen in his music; every time I listen, I am transported. And I don’t mean this in a cliché, melodramatic fashion. I mean this sincerely. His music is magic, and while most of his songs are hard to individualize, listening to his music reminds me that sometimes simple is better. Sometimes pure, honest sound is what I need to hear. Bon Iver’s self-titled album arrives June 21, 2011, and you can be sure that I will be pre-ordering this one. And yes, I’m actually buying this music, not just finding it for free online. It’s that good. For now, stream the album on NPR by following the link below.

Patience is a Virtue

18 May

If you’re a Bon Iver fan, you know that “Calgary” is the first single in two years. God, why do you make us wait so long? Folksy, haunting, soothing, layered music. I.e. quintessential Bon Iver music. I.e. Amazing.

Family of the Year

24 Mar

In Nicaragua on Saint Patrick’s Day, this one bar had an Irish band playing. Yeah, I know, Saint Patrick’s Day in Nicaragua. That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But hearing this band, which was playing awful folk tunes, reminded me how uniting live music can be.

While this band doesn’t play Irish folk tunes in a bar in Nicaragua, they certainly have character. Think Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Give a listen to Family of the Year‘s “Chugjug.” They claim their music is a “feel good summer sound” and I don’t doubt it.

Side A

23 Jan

I’m a huge Justin Vernon fan. “Side A” is a fourteen and a half minute collaboration with All Tiny Creatures, mixing drifting instrumentals with Bon Iver sounds seamlessly. I can’t find a video for this one, but you can (and should) download the piece below.
